SYDNEY: Australia’s focus on bolstering their spin department for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 includes exploring options beyond Adam Zampa and Glenn Maxwell. Despite being omitted from the recent central contracts announcement, spinner Ashton Agar remains a strong contender for the tournament, as affirmed by Australia Men’s selection chairman, George Bailey.

While absent from the initial contract list, Agar’s chances are buoyed by favorable conditions expected to favor spinners in the Caribbean Islands and USA. Bailey indicated the possibility of including a third spinner alongside Zampa and Maxwell in the 15-member squad.

“The squad’s composition suggests the inclusion of a second spinner,” Bailey explained to reporters. “Considering Glenn Maxwell as a frontline spinner rather than a part-time option, ‘Zamps’ is a certainty, leaving room for one more.”

The final squad selection, slated for the end of April, will heavily consider both Agar and Stoinis. Agar, Australia’s second-highest wicket-taker in T20Is, faces competition from leg-spinner Tanveer Sangha, who has showcased his prowess in recent matches. Additionally, all-rounder Matthew Short, already under a central contract, provides another viable option.

For selectors willing to explore beyond the current pool, standout performers from the recent Big Bash League season such as Cameron Boyce and Lloyd Pope offer promising alternatives. Mitchell Swepson and Matthew Kuhnemann also present themselves as potential additions to the mix, having showcased their skills in previous seasons and formats.
