Azerbaijan Announces Schedule for February 7 Presidential Election

BAKU: The Central Election Commission (CEC) of Azerbaijan, chaired by Mazahir Panahov, convened a regular meeting to discuss key items on its agenda, including the upcoming extraordinary presidential election scheduled for February 7, 2024.

During the meeting, CEC Chairman Mazahir Panahov highlighted the four agenda items, which encompassed the approval of the protocol from the January 9, 2024 meeting, the establishment of a commission for drawing lots to distribute free airtime in connection with the presidential election, determining the draw’s place and time, amending the composition of some district election commissions, and addressing current issues.

Panahov emphasized that the list of registered candidates for the presidential election would be officially published by January 18, 2024. The election campaigning is set to commence on January 15, with a suspension scheduled for 08:00 (GMT +4) on February 6.

President Ilham Aliyev issued a decree on December 7, 2023, calling for an extraordinary presidential election in Azerbaijan on February 7, 2024. The ruling New Azerbaijan Party (YAP) nominated Ilham Aliyev as its candidate, and on December 19, the CEC approved his candidacy for participation in the election.

A total of 17 candidates have been registered to run in the extraordinary presidential election, reflecting a diverse field of participants. Azerbaijan currently has seven registered presidential candidates.
