RIO DE JANEIRO: Former President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro at a rally in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, praised Elon Musk from upholding the freedom of expression which according to him is at risk in his country.

He said that Musk perseveres freedom for everyone.

Musk is currently facing an inquiry in Brazil after he accused a Supreme Court justice of censoring social networks, terming him a dictator and vowed to disobey rulings to block users involved in spreading disinformation.

Bolsonaro while speaking to his thousands of supporters said the billionaire had the courage to show, where the democracy in Brazil was going and how much freedom the country has already lost.

The 69-year-old former leader also criticized the dictatorship in Brazil and asked the supporters to continue the fight to protect freedom of expression.

The judge, Alexandre de Moraes, has started a crusade against disinformation, especially attempts by far-right supporters of Bolsonaro to disgrace the voting system of Brazil.

Brazilian authorities are probing whether Bolsonaro plotted an attempted coup to stop his 2022 election opponent and incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva from assuming office in January 2023.

Moraes blocked online users

Moraes blocked online users including figures like far-right ex-congressman Daniel Silveira, who was awarded nine years in prison in 2022 on charges of leading a campaign to overthrow the Supreme Court.

Musk had vowed to restore blocked accounts on X, saying the company would perhaps lose all revenue in Brazil and have to close down its office there but principles matter more than profit.

However, the Brazilian office of X has announced to comply with court orders to block users from spreading disinformation.
