RIYADH: The BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) nations has decided to invite six countries – Argentina, Ethiopia, Egypt, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates – to join the bloc, said South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on Thursday.

The decision was taken at a summit in Johannesburg this week. BRICS membership of new countries will take effect on January 1, 2024, said South Africa President.

Leaders from BRICS have agreed to expand their group, which would be the first expansion since 2010.
