BEIJING: Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Wenbin reiterated on Tuesday that China’s scientific research activities in relevant waters serve peaceful purposes and aim to contribute to global scientific understanding of the ocean.

During his regular briefing, Wang stated, “These activities strictly adhere to the terms outlined in the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.” He was responding to inquiries regarding the upcoming docking of the Chinese scientific research vessel Xiang Yang Hong 03 in the Indian Ocean later in the week.

Highlighting the longstanding cooperation between China and the Maldives in marine scientific research, Wang expressed appreciation for the facilitation and assistance provided by the Maldives to Chinese research vessels entering its ports. He emphasized that such assistance is in accordance with sovereignty principles and reflects the strong friendship between China and the Maldives, as well as compliance with relevant international law.

Qian Feng, director of the research department at the National Strategy Institute at Tsinghua University, said that the Indian Ocean is not solely India’s domain but constitutes international waters. Qian criticized India and some of its media outlets for viewing China’s lawful activities through a biased lens.

China Denounces Indian Opposition to Research Activities in Indian Ocean

Qian noted that judgments on the capabilities of Chinese research ships should be made by impartial parties like the Maldives rather than being based on unfounded speculation.

He highlighted the warming relations between China and the Maldives, noting President Mohamed Muizzu’s recent visit to China, during which the two nations elevated their bilateral ties to a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.

Regarding India’s opposition to China’s scientific research activities, including previous objections to a Chinese research ship docked in Sri Lanka, Qian condemned India’s actions as reflective of a hegemonic mentality. He criticized India’s deployment of a submarine as further evidence of such a mindset.
