Comedian Athar Shah Death Anniversary On Friday

ISLAMABAD: The 4th death anniversary of famous comedian, artist, writer, and poet Athar Shah Khan famously known as “Mr. Jaidi” is being observed on Friday.

Born on January 1, 1943, in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, Athar Shah Khan migrated to Lahore with his family in 1947.

Athar Shah embarked on his illustrious career as a writer six decades ago at Radio Pakistan, penning approximately 700 plays over 20 years. His radio play “Rang Hi Rang Jaidi Ke Sang” (1973) enjoyed an impressive run of over 19 years.

Subsequently, his iconic portrayal of ‘Jaidi’ in PTV’s “Intizar Farmaiye” catapulted him to nationwide fame, becoming a household name.

Among his notable works are “Hello Hello,” “Ba Adab Ba Mulahiza Hoshiyar,” “Haye Jaidi,” “Burger Family,” “Jaidi in Trouble,” “Laakhon Mein Teen,” and “Problem House.” His debut as a writer in cinema came with the release of “Bazi” in 1970, which marked the first collaboration between Muhammad Ali and Nadeem. He also penned the story for the platinum jubilee Punjabi film “Manji Kithay Dahwan” (1974).

Renowned for his humorous poetry, Athar Shah Khan participated in numerous Urdu Mushairas, captivating audiences with his distinctive style.

In recognition of his contributions, he was honoured with the Pride of Performance award by the government of Pakistan in 2001.

Athar Shah Khan Jaidi breathed his last in Karachi on May 10, 2020, at the age of 76, succumbing to a heart attack.   —APP
