ISTANBUL: Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan emphasized that amidst escalating tensions between Israel and Iran, the focus must remain on the situation in Gaza, with the primary goal being the cessation of the Israeli occupation of Palestinian territories.

Speaking during Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry’s visit to Istanbul on Saturday, Fidan stressed the need for restraint from both Iran and Israel. Shoukry echoed this sentiment, expressing regional concerns over the escalating conflict.

Shoukry’s visit to Turkiye coincides with heightened tensions in the Middle East following an apparent Israeli attack on Iran, though Israel has not officially commented on the incident.

Addressing a joint news conference with Fidan, Shoukry underscored the importance of preventing the conflict’s further escalation and reiterated calls for restraint from both parties.

Fidan attributed the root cause of instability in the Middle East to Israel’s occupation of Palestinian territories, bolstered by Western support. He emphasized the need to prioritize efforts towards ending this occupation and achieving a two-state solution.

Furthermore, Fidan disclosed discussions with Shoukry regarding increased humanitarian aid delivery to Gaza.

Shoukry separately announced Egypt’s intention to host a Turkish delegation to facilitate preparations for a future visit by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to Turkiye.
