ISLAMABAD: Former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Zaka Ashraf stated on Saturday that the decision to remove Shaheen Shah Afridi from the national team captaincy was premature.

“It was Babar Azam who voluntarily stepped down from the captaincy across all formats. I wanted him to continue as the captain in red-ball cricket and to appoint a new captain in white-ball formats,” said the former PCB chief while speaking to the media.

“While I advocated for Babar Azam to continue as the captain in red-ball cricket, I believed it was time to appoint a new leader for the white-ball formats,” he continued.

Ashraf conveyed his best wishes to Azam and the entire national cricket team, mentioning that it was premature to remove Shaheen Shah Afridi from the captaincy.

Regarding coaching, Ashraf remarked, “Whether the coach is local or foreign is immaterial. What matters is that the appointed coach should contribute positively to the team’s performance.”

Meanwhile, Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi left the Kakul fitness camp due to personal reasons.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) confirmed Shaheen’s departure, stating, “Shaheen Shah Afridi has left the camp due to a family illness.”

Sources revealed that prior to Shaheen Shah Afridi, Sahibzada Farhan and Mohammad Rizwan had also left the camp due to personal reasons.”
