Forensic Tests of Suspected Letters Revealed

ISLAMABAD:  The Counter Terrorism Department of the police has received the forensic report regarding suspected letters of judges, local media claimed on Friday.  Sources said that the initial investigations have showed that the arsenic was not in its pure form.

Local media cited sources as saying that the forensic report found 10% arsenic content in the powder contained in the letters. It added that more than 70% of arsenic in the powder is very toxic, it has a severe effect on human nerves by smelling it.

Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated the government’s commitment to investigating the recent threat letters received by several judges, of the Supreme Court and High Court.  Chairing a federal cabinet meeting in Islamabad on Thursday, the PM stated, “The government of Pakistan will thoroughly investigate the threatening letters sent to the judges.”

Suspected Letters

His remarks follow reports of multiple judges from the Supreme Court, Islamabad High Court, and Lahore High Court received suspected letters.

The PM said that in the light of the meeting with the CJP on the issue of letter by Islamabad High Court judges, the federal cabinet approved constitution of an inquiry commission. The commission was constituted following consultation with Justice (retd) Tasadduq Hussain Jilani and it was accordingly notified.

It may be recalled that the Supreme Court of Pakistan also took a suo motu notice IHC judges’ letter and also held a hearing.
