PARIS: France and Moldova will sign a defense cooperation accord on Thursday as part of the West’s efforts to strengthen Moldova’s capabilities amid what they fear are increasing efforts by Russia to destabilize the former Soviet state amid escalating tensions in the region.

Moldova, situated as a western neighbor of Ukraine, has historically maintained strained relations with Moscow, particularly as Chisinau aligns itself with Ukraine in its conflict against Russia. The presence of Russian troops and peacekeepers in Transdniestria, a breakaway region of Moldova, has further exacerbated tensions, with Moscow providing ongoing support to the autonomous statelet for over three decades.

The French presidency announced the upcoming signing of defense and economic cooperation agreements during the meeting between President Emmanuel Macron and Moldovan counterpart Maia Sandu in Paris. Macron is expected to emphasize France’s commitment to Moldova’s independence, sovereignty, and security, particularly in light of Russia’s aggressive actions in Ukraine.

Defense Accord Between France and Moldova

The initial accord reached in September outlined provisions for military personnel training, regular defense dialogue, and intelligence sharing between the two nations. Additionally, Paris pledged support for Moldova’s efforts to enhance its military capabilities, including potential acquisitions of anti-air defense systems akin to France’s Mistral system.

In a demonstration of this commitment, Moldova recently acquired Thales-made GM200 radar, enhancing its aerial surveillance capabilities. France’s defense minister has also announced plans to conduct an audit of Moldova’s air defense resources to bolster the security of Moldovan airspace.

Concurrently, Western states, convened by France, are set to hold discussions via audio call to explore avenues for increased support to Ukraine and Moldova. The recent plea by the Transdniestria region for Russian assistance to withstand Moldovan pressure underscores the gravity of the situation, with Western governments viewing it as a potential propaganda ploy by the pro-European Chisinau government.
