Hamas Says Ball is in Israel’s Court in Gaza Truce Talks

GAZA: Palestinian group Hamas on early Friday said that its delegation attending Gaza ceasefire talks in Cairo had left the city for Qatar, saying the ball is now completely in Israel’s hands.

The group in a message to other Palestinian factions said the delegation left Cairo for Doha.

It said Israel had rejected the proposal submitted by the mediators and raised objections to it on several matters, adding it stood by the proposal.

The group said now the ball is now completely in the hands of the occupation forces.

Egyptian outlet Al-Qahera News on Thursday reported that representatives of both camps left Cairo after two days of talks aimed at finalizing agreement in the seven-month war in the Gaza Strip.

Efforts by Egypt and other mediators, namely the ed States and Qatar continue to bring the points of view of the two parties closer.

Hamas on Monday said that it had accepted a ceasefire suggestion proposal put forward by mediators.

The deal, involved a withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza, the return of displaced Palestinians and the exchange of hostages and prisoners with the aim of a permanent ceasefire.

Israel has long been opposing the idea of a permanent ceasefire, insisting it must finish the job of eliminating Hamas.

Israel’s relentless bombardment campaign has so far killed at least 34,904 Palestinian people in Gaza, mostly women and children, according to the Hamas-run territory’s health ministry.

Ezzat al-Rishq, a spokesperson for Hamas, on Thursday accused Israel of carrying out incursions in Gaza’s southernmost city of Rafah to block talks seeking a truce in the seven-month-long Israeli bombardment in the Palestinian territory.
