Heavy Rains and Flooding Claim 32 Lives in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

PESHAWAR: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) released a report on Wednesday detailing the devastating impact of heavy rains and flooding in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, with 31 fatalities and 41 injuries reported across different districts.

According to the PDMA report, among the deceased are 15 children, 12 men, and 5 women, while the injured include 6 women, 28 men, and 7 children. The disaster resulted in damage to 1370 houses due to collapsing walls and roofs, with 160 houses completely destroyed and 1210 partially damaged.

The affected districts include Dir Upper and Lower, Chitral Lower and Upper, Swat, Bajaur, Shangla, Mansehra, Mohmand, Malakand, Karak, Tank, Mardan, Peshawar, Charsadda, Nowshera, Bunir, Hangu, Bataghram, Bannu, North and South Waziristan, Kohat, Dera Ismail Khan, and Orakzai District.

Responding to the crisis, Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur instructed PDMA to release Rs. 50 million for financial assistance in 12 affected districts. Notable allocations include Rs. 20 million for Nowshera, Rs. 5 million for Dir Lower, and varying amounts for other districts such as Swat, Malakand, Dir Upper, Tank, Chitral Lower, Bitaghram, Karak, Peshawar, and Charsadda.

In addition to targeted financial assistance, PDMA released Rs. 10 million for general relief in Chitral Lower and Rs. 81 million to various districts since March 29 to address the emergency situation. The relief funds are designated for victim support and rehabilitation efforts, with a focus on aiding affected families.

Subia Hassam, Director of PDMA’s Complex Emergency Wing, announced the allocation of Rs. 80 million for tribal areas, including Rs. 20 million for North and South Waziristan, Rs. 5 million for Kurram, Rs. 1.5 million for Khyber, Rs. 1 million for Bajaur, and Rs. 1 million for Mohmand.

Director Subia Hassam assured that additional funds would be expedited to districts facing emergency situations to support relief activities promptly.
