RAWALPINDI: Pakistan’s main opposition party founder chairman and former prime minister Imran Khan has ordered the removal of Sher Afzal Marwat from the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) core and political committees due to controversial statements.
Addressing the media outside Adiala Jail, where the former prime minister is incarcerated, PTI General Secretary Omar Ayub said that Imran Khan also directed the party leadership to issue a show cause notice to Sher Afzal Marwat. This action came after Marwat criticized Omar Ayub, the opposition leader, for dropping his name as chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of the National Assembly.
Ayub highlighted that Marwat had been cautioned multiple times against deviating from the party’s policies.
Furthermore, Ayub criticized political opponents, alleging that President Asif Ali Zardari and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had taken three and two vehicles, respectively, from Toshkhana. He also accused Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz of failing to declare a vehicle obtained from the state depository.
Ayub added that the PTI founder has entrusted a significant task to former President Arif Alvi.
It is pertinent to mention here that PTI had previously named Sher Afzal Marwat for the PAC Chairmanship, and later the name of Sahibzada Hamid Raza emerged. However, on April 30, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan announced Marwat’s nomination for the PAC chairman position, claiming that all disputes had been resolved within the party.
The PTI Political Committee meeting on May 6 changed the nominee for the all-important chairmanship of the PAC and replaced Sher Afzal Marwat with Sheikh Waqas Akram. Imran Khan later approved this decision on Wednesday (May 8).
Following the nomination, PTI leader Sher Afzal Marwat alleged that his attempt to meet with the PTI founder in jail was hindered and thwarted by party colleagues Shibli Faraz and Omar Ayub.
Speaking to the media, Marwat claimed that Shibli Faraz and Omar Ayub, in collaboration with the jail administration, prevented his scheduled meeting with the party’s founder.
He further explained that his inclusion in the PTI’s political committee was facilitated by Barrister Gohar, adding that his brother was removed from the KP cabinet.
“If the PTI founder asks me to tender my resignation from the National Assembly, I comply without any hesitation,” Marwat said.
