Israeli Shelling Kills Lebanese Mayor

BEIRUT: An Israeli shelling killed the mayor of a Lebanese village on Monday, as Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah intensified hostilities triggered by the war in Gaza.

Lebanon’s official media has reported that Hussein Mansour was killed in his home in the village of Taybeh a few kilometers away from Israel’s border.

A relative of Mohamed Mansour also confirmed the news report. As per reports the mayor was struck by a shell which did not explode.

A Hezbollah official on Sunday that Israel had escalated its attacks in Lebanon.

After the eruption of the Israel- Hamas war on October 7, Hezbollah also mounted near-daily rocket strikes on Israeli military positions at the border while Israel waged artillery and air strikes in south Lebanon.

According to Gaza’s health ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra, since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas, 18,205 people have been killed, mostly women and children, amid a deepening humanitarian crisis.

The Israeli raids have almost destroyed entire neighborhoods in northern Gaza. Israeli ground troops have been facing heavy resistance from Hamas fighters in the area.

According to the UN some 1.87 million Palestinians, over 80 percent of Gaza’s population, have left their homes.
