Japan to Extend Support to Worst Flood-affected Districts of Punjab, KP

ISLAMABAD: The government of Japan and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Pakistan’s office announced to extend their assistance to the worst flood-affected districts of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

According to a press release on Tuesday, JICA Pakistan office extended its backing to the flood-affected districts of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces by providing in total 9,000 mosquito nets, 80,000 ORS packs, and 400,000 water purification tablets.

The targeted areas in Punjab included the districts of Dera Ghazi Khan and Rajanpur while in KP, the districts of Kohistan, Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, Nowshera, and Charsada will be served.

It is estimated that around 80,000 families with pregnant or lactating women and children under five will benefit from the move.

According to the Post Disaster Need Assessment (PDNA) on Pakistan Floods 2022, almost about 650,000 pregnant women are facing problems in having access to maternal services, while around 4 million children are deprived of health services and facing a substantial increase in infectious diseases like diarrhea, malaria, dengue, cholera, etc.

Japan and JICA Support

JICA program will support reducing the outbreaks of communicable diseases with a special focus on pregnant and lactating women along with children below five years. JICA is already working on some projects related to mother and child health care and newborns in both provinces. 

Besides, in September 2022 the government of Japan provided US$7 million emergency grant to address the immediate impact of the floods in the affected areas.

In addition, the government of Japan announced another grant assistance of US438.9 million to Pakistan on December 2, 2022, as part of Japan’s supplementary budget to deliver lifesaving aid to the flood victims.
