TOKYO: Japanese pharmaceutical company Kobayashi Pharmaceutical is under scrutiny after one death was potentially linked to health supplements recalled last week by the firm. The incident follows reports of hospitalizations related to the prescription-free tablets.

The recalled supplements, including “beni koji choleste help” and two similar products, contain an ingredient called red yeast rice, known for its cholesterol-lowering properties. While the supplements are intended to improve health, concerns have arisen regarding their safety after reports of adverse reactions, including kidney dysfunction.

Kobayashi Pharmaceutical has acknowledged the death of an individual who regularly consumed one of the recalled products over several years. The company expressed its condolences and pledged to investigate the matter thoroughly.

In addition to the reported death, the company has received numerous unconfirmed reports of hospitalizations, prompting an urgent investigation into the potential link between the supplements and adverse health effects.

Japanese health authorities, led by Health Minister Keizo Takemi, have vowed to collaborate with local authorities to investigate the cause of the health issues and prevent further harm to consumers.

While Kobayashi Pharmaceutical has voluntarily recalled the implicated products, the investigation into the precise cause of the health problems is ongoing. Initial analyses have revealed the presence of unintended ingredients, raising concerns about product safety and quality control.

As the investigation progresses, Kobayashi Pharmaceutical faces mounting scrutiny over its handling of the situation and the safety of its products. The company’s executives are expected to engage with affected parties and address public concerns as they work to ensure the integrity of their supplements.
