KABUL: The counter-narcotics department of Afghanistan’s Ministry of Interior conducted a significant operation today in Deh Sabz, Kabul, burning over three tons of solid narcotics and 22,000 liters of liquid narcotics.

This haul, collected from provinces in the central zone, including Kabul, underscores the ongoing efforts post the re-establishment of the Islamic Emirate. Authorities have made approximately 9,000 arrests in connection with these seizures.

Ahmadullah Ahmadi, the General Director of the Police for Combating Narcotics, highlighted the destruction, stating that 379 kilograms of opium are currently being incinerated, with plans to burn 635 kilograms of heroin. These actions signal a determined stance against narcotics trafficking.

Abdul Mateen Qani, spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior, emphasized that while cultivation and production of narcotics in Afghanistan have reportedly ceased, eradicating the scourge entirely necessitates concerted regional and international cooperation. Qani lamented the insufficient support from the international community in combatting narcotics within Afghanistan.

Rohullah Habibi, head of the Primary Court for Narcotics, pointed out challenges faced at Afghan airports, citing instances where traffickers from Pakistan evade detection until they reach Afghan airports, where they are apprehended before transferring narcotics abroad. This situation underscores broader regional dynamics in the fight against narcotics trafficking.

Despite Afghanistan’s efforts, some neighboring countries have raised concerns about ongoing narcotics trafficking from the region, illustrating the complex and interconnected nature of this persistent challenge.
