ISLAMABAD: Law Minister Azam Nazir Tarar on Thursday justified the Election Commission’s decision to postpone the Punjab Assembly elections to October 8.

Addressing a presser, the minister said that Pakistan is standing on the verge of a serious economic meltdown and political crisis. He said the region has been in the grip of terrorism for the last four decades and the neighbouring country Afghanistan continues to be ravaged by war. He further said that the geographical situation of Pakistan is not hidden from anyone.

Blaming PTI Chairman and former prime minister Imran Khan for the political unrest, he said that Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Punjab assemblies were disbanded on the demand of just one person.

He said that the election commission announced the name of the caretaker chief minister in Punjab only after a lack of agreement between the government and opposition benches.

Tarar said the ECP has decided to arrange elections for all assemblies simultaneously.

Law minister criticises Imran Khan

Criticizing Imran Khan, the minister said that in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, there will be a political government after the elections.  Imran Khan disbanded these assemblies to avoid a no-confidence motion.

Tarar claimed that the previous PTI government wanted to resettle terrorist organizations in the country.
