Jakarta, Indonesia: On Tuesday, a significant magnitude-6.6 earthquake struck Indonesia’s eastern region, specifically off Halmahera island in North Maluku province, as reported by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The earthquake occurred at 0948 GMT at a depth of approximately 35 kilometers (22 miles).

Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of damage or injuries following the earthquake, and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre confirmed that there was “no tsunami threat” associated with the quake in the Molucca Sea.

However, Indonesia’s geophysics agency (BMKG) has cautioned residents in nearby areas to remain vigilant for possible aftershocks.

Indonesia, zeing situated on the Pacific “Ring of Fire” where tectonic plates intersect, experiences frequent seismic activity. This geological positioning makes the region prone to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.

This recent earthquake serves as a reminder of Indonesia’s susceptibility to natural disasters, with past events like the 2021 Sulawesi earthquake that claimed over 100 lives and the devastating 2004 Aceh earthquake and tsunami that resulted in immense loss of life.

Indonesia’s authorities continue to monitor seismic activity closely and urge residents to stay informed and prepared for potential aftershocks or future events in this seismically active area.
