LONDON: London authorities have detained a man after a car crashed into the gates of Buckingham Palace during the weekend, as confirmed by police on Sunday.

According to the Metropolitan Police, the incident occurred at approximately 02:30 GMT on Saturday when the vehicle collided with the gates of the royal residence. Armed officers swiftly apprehended the driver at the scene on suspicion of criminal damage, after which he was transported to a hospital for further assessment, stated a police spokesperson.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported in connection with the incident. However, authorities have launched ongoing investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Security measures at Buckingham Palace, the iconic official residence of the British royal family, are rigorously enforced, with armed officers continuously monitoring the premises.

This episode marks another instance of security breaches at the palace, with previous incidents including attempted break-ins and unauthorized entries. Notably, last September saw the arrest of a 25-year-old man attempting to access the royal stables, while last May, a man was apprehended for hurling shotgun cartridges into the palace grounds in the lead-up to King Charles III’s coronation.

In a separate incident last year, a 43-year-old man was detained for ramming his vehicle into the gates protecting Downing Street, the official residence of British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
