MOSCOW: Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin early on Friday said that Russian anti-aircraft units intercepted a drone south of Moscow.

He said there were no injuries or damage from falling debris.

Sobyanin, in a post on the social media platform Telegram, said the drone, headed for Moscow, was shot down in the Podolsk district, just south of the capital. Emergency crews and specialists were called to the scene.

The governor of the Bryansk region, which borders Ukraine, said anti-aircraft units had shot three Ukrainian drones overnight with no injuries or damage.

The Russian Defense Ministry said two Ukrainian drones were downed in the Belgorod region and also on the border.

According to an estimate by a NATO official Ukraine has intensified drone attacks on oil processing facilities in different regions of Russia since the beginning of the year, disrupting 15 percent of Russia’s oil refining capacity.

One such strike targeted a major oil processing plant in the Bashkortostan region on Thursday some 1,500 km away, a Kyiv intelligence source said. The attack was the longest-range such attack since the war started in February 2022.

Drone attacks targeting the Russian capital are rarer occurrences.
