MEXICO CITY, Mexico: A mayoral candidate was killed while meeting supporters in northeastern Mexico Friday, authorities said.

The murder of Noe Ramos is part of a wave of political violence ahead of June vote.

According to Irving Barrios, the attorney general of violence-wracked Tamaulipas state, a manhunt was launched for the attacker.

The mayoral hopeful died of his wounds, state security spokesman Jorge Cuellar told Milenio television.

The center-right candidate was walking through the streets to meet residents of the city of Mante a man with a knife attacked him, according to local media.

Mexican politicians often fall victim to bloodshed connected to drug smuggling and corruption, particularly in the run-up to elections.

According to research firm Laboratorio Electoral, around 30 people seeking election have been murdered across the country since last June.

They include an aspiring mayor of one of Mexico’s most dangerous cities. Gisela Gaytan was gunned down in the street.

Gaytan was campaigning in the central city of Celaya, and was shot dead in early April during a visit to supporters.
