SEOUL, South Korea: North Korea state media Saturday said the country conducted a test on a “super-large warhead” designed for a strategic cruise missile.

It further said that it also launched a new type of anti-aircraft missile.

KCNA news agency reported: “The DPRK Missile Administration has conducted a power test of a super-large warhead designed for ‘Hwasal-1 Ra-3’ strategic cruise missile”, referring to North Korea by an abbreviation for its official name.

The Kim-led country Friday afternoon also carried out a test launch of a “‘Pyoljji-1-2’ new-type anti-aircraft missile in the West Sea of Korea”, KCNA said adding that “a certain goal was attained” through the test though it didn’t provide further details.

Both tests were part of the “regular activities of the administration and its affiliated defence science institutes”, KCNA reported, referencing the operation of “new-type weapon systems”.

The state news agency added that the tests “had nothing to do with the surrounding situation”, without giving any further information.

In early April, North Korea announced it had test-fired a new intermediate- and long-range solid-fuel hypersonic missile, and state media shared video of the launch with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un looking on.

Although North Korea has been subject to multiple international sanctions since its second nuclear test in 2009, its nuclear and weapons programme continues.
