ISLAMABAD: Digital Rights Foundation’s (DRF) Executive Director Nighat Dad has joined the United Nations Secretary General’s high-level advisory board on Artificial Intelligence (AI) along with esteemed distinguished individuals from across the globe.

According to a press release issued by Digital Rights Foundation Pakistan on Friday, the board will address the overarching theme of addressing global governance of AI.

By the end of the year, the AI advisory body’s interim recommendations will focus on three main areas: the international governance of AI and generative AI and a shared understanding of risks and challenges associated with deploying these technologies.

The body will also be addressing key opportunities and enablers for leveraging AI to accelerate the delivery of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations.

Nighat Dad expresses her enthusiasm about her role on the advisory board, emphasizing her deep sense of honor. She underscores the significance of this high-level advisory board’s focus on the rapidly emerging field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), which presents opportunities and substantial challenges. She is eager to contribute a global perspective to our discussions, particularly from most of the world.

Her primary focus is on emphasizing the crucial importance of acknowledging potential human rights issues that may impact marginalized communities across the globe as we embrace new technologies. Her ultimate goal is to proactively tackle real-time threats and vulnerabilities experienced by these communities while shedding light on emerging problems through an intersectional lens, all within the context of global AI governance.

The board’s mission also involves reinforcing the necessity for member states to take purposeful and prompt actions regarding the current AI governance structures or those soon to be adopted by states. The board’s main objective is to develop AI governance mechanisms tailored for member states and, over time, support and facilitate the implementation of these governance mechanisms, with a strong emphasis on human rights and digital rights perspectives.

Since most member states are still deploying AI-driven technologies, there is a clear need for education and awareness regarding the implications of these technologies. The board will actively address this requirement through its gatherings and by providing recommendations to member states.
