CALIFORNIA: Apple Inc. has renewed discussions with OpenAI about using the startup’s generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology to power some new features being introduced in the iPhone later this year, western media reported on Saturday.

Sources familiar with the matter have revealed that the companies have initiated talks regarding the terms of a possible agreement and the integration of OpenAI features into Apple’s forthcoming iPhone operating system, iOS 18.

Last month, Bloomberg had reported Apple’s negotiations to license Google’s Gemini chatbot for inclusion in new iPhone functionalities. However, Apple has not yet finalized its decision regarding potential partners and could opt to strike agreements with both OpenAI and Google, an affiliate of Alphabet Inc., or pursue alternative providers, as mentioned in the Bloomberg report.

Apple has trailed behind competitors like Microsoft and Google in implementing generative AI, which can generate responses akin to human speech in written interactions, into its products.

In February, Apple CEO Tim Cook disclosed the company’s significant investment in generative AI and hinted at unveiling further details about its integration plans later this year.
