SEOUL: North Korean leader Kim Jong Un conveyed his congratulations to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, praising Russian voters for demonstrating “unshakeable support” for their re-elected leader, according to state media reports.

In a congratulatory message relayed through the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Kim lauded Putin’s victory as an indication of the Russian people’s unwavering trust and backing for his leadership and executive prowess in state affairs.

The North Korean leader emphasized that Putin’s re-election to the presidency reflects the Russian electorate’s recognition of his exceptional leadership qualities and resolute governance.

Historical allies, Russia and North Korea have maintained close ties despite facing global sanctions for separate reasons—Moscow for its annexation of Crimea and involvement in the conflict in Ukraine, and Pyongyang for its nuclear weapons program.

The summit held between Putin and Kim in Russia’s far east last September underscored the enduring partnership between the two nations. Following the summit, reports emerged suggesting North Korea’s provision of weaponry to Russia, further solidifying their relationship.

Kim’s message reiterated North Korea’s commitment to supporting Russia and expressed confidence in Putin’s leadership to safeguard the sovereignty and security of the country.

Putin’s landslide victory in the recent election, securing over 87 percent of the vote, was deemed illegitimate by Western powers, although it underscored the strong support he enjoys domestically.
