RAWALPINDI: A young woman has given birth to six babies — four boys and two girls — at the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital in Punjab’s Rawalpindi, local media reported on Friday.

The mother, Zeenat Bibi, and father Waheed hailing from Hazara Colony are extremely delighted after the miraculous birth of sextuplets.

According to doctors, the babies are in good health and the birth weights are normal. The mother is also doing well.

The newly-born will continue receiving medical care at the neonatal intensive care unit (ICU) of the hospital until cleared to go home.

Sextuplets do not occur naturally. The popularity of fertility drugs in recent years has enhanced the chance of such multiple births but doctors warn that they are best avoided.

There are different types of sextuplets. Some are fraternal, meaning they come from six separate egg and sperm combinations. Others are identical, which happens when a single fertilised egg splits into multiple embryos, according to a website. Sextuplets can be all boys, all girls, or a mix of both.
