Pakistan’s PM Vows Zero Tolerance Against Smuggling, Corruption

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Friday said the government will not allow any political or bureaucratic interference in its move to curb smuggling, corruption, power theft and tax evasion in the country.

Chairing a meeting focused on anti-smuggling measures, the Prime Minister underscored, “No political or bureaucratic influence will hinder this crucial endeavor, which is imperative for the welfare of Pakistan and its 250 million citizens.”

He stressed the importance of comprehending and promptly addressing the nation’s real challenges to revitalize and stabilize the economy. To achieve this, he called for collaboration among all stakeholders, including provinces, institutions, and armed forces, to tackle the significant challenge of economic revival.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif identified illegal trade and smuggling as major impediments to the country’s economy. He recalled a decision made in 2022 by the coalition government to export 250,000 tons of sugar, which was later withdrawn due to surplus concerns, only for the same amount to be exported to Afghanistan subsequently.

Highlighting the substantial annual loss of around Rs 400 to 500 billion due to power theft and other electricity-related issues, he emphasized the need for comprehensive reforms in the energy sector.

Regarding tax revenues, the Prime Minister disclosed that the government’s target for the year was Rs 9 trillion, with the potential to collect an additional Rs 4 trillion through tax system improvements and anti-corruption measures. He pledged to vigorously pursue the recovery of Rs 2.7 trillion currently under litigation.

Commending the efforts of the Chief of Army Staff in combating smuggling and power theft, the Prime Minister noted significant progress in curbing illegal activities due to concerted efforts and cooperation among provinces and armed forces.

Additionally, the government is committed to promoting industry and agriculture sectors, alongside plans to digitize the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) system to enhance tax revenues. The Prime Minister vowed to incentivize honest officers while cracking down on corruption.

Addressing concerns about law and order, he affirmed the government’s determination to thwart any threats to national security.
