GENEVA: Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki stated on Wednesday that he believes Hamas knew the reasons behind its exclusion from a potential new government in the Palestinian territories. Speaking at a press conference, Maliki emphasized the need for a “technocratic” government without the involvement of the Palestinian resistance group Hamas, currently engaged in a conflict with Israel.

Maliki expressed that the current priority is engaging the international community to provide emergency relief to Palestinians and address the reconstruction of Gaza following the Israel-Hamas war. He outlined the necessity of establishing a technocratic government comprising experts committed to navigating the challenging period and transitioning towards stability.

Palestinian PM Announces Govt’s Resignation

The Palestinian Prime Minister, Mohammad Shtayyeh, announced the resignation of his government on Monday, citing the need for change after the recent conflict. President Mahmud Abbas decreed that the government would continue in an interim capacity until a new one is formed.

Maliki emphasized the importance of salvaging innocent Palestinian lives and halting the ongoing conflict, asserting that Hamas should support the establishment of a technocratic government to facilitate stability and eventual elections to determine the future government of Palestine.

Riyad al-Maliki is currently attending the United Nations Human Rights Council session in Geneva.

The recent conflict in Gaza erupted after an attack by Hamas on October 7. Israel’s retaliatory actions, including airstrikes and a ground offensive, have led to the killing of nearly 30,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, in Gaza.
