ISLAMABAD: Chairman of the ASEAN Committee in Islamabad (ACI) and Ambassador of the Philippines to Pakistan, Maria Agnes M. Cervantes, emphasized the significance of ‘Bicycle Day’ as a platform for promoting healthy and socio-economic activities, not only within the ASEAN region but globally.
Ambassador Cervantes highlighted the multifaceted benefits of bicycles, stating that they serve as vital contributors to economic, social, and physical well-being, advocating for their promotion as a cultural norm towards sustainable living.
Speaking to the media during the Bicycle Day event organized by the ACI in Islamabad, Ambassador Cervantes was joined by Dean of the Diplomatic Corps Islamabad and Ambassador of Turkmenistan Atadjan Movlamov, as well as other ASEAN Ambassadors, including those from Vietnam, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Morocco, and Indonesia.
She underscored the integral role bicycles play in daily life across ASEAN countries, noting their widespread adoption as a healthy activity. Ambassador Cervantes praised the enthusiastic participation of people from various backgrounds in Pakistan, highlighting the universal appeal of cycling as a positive pursuit.
Reflecting on the collaboration among ASEAN member states, Ambassador Cervantes acknowledged the collective efforts of the diplomatic community and local businesses in commemorating Bicycle Day.
She emphasized the environmental and economic advantages of cycling, citing it as a simple, affordable, and eco-friendly mode of transport.
Ambassador Movlamov commended the initiative of organizing Bicycle Day, recognizing its positive impact on both economic and social aspects of life. The event culminated with diplomats and their families participating in a cycle race, alongside members of the local community, promoting the spirit of unity and cooperation.
