TEHRAN: President Ebrahim Raisi on Sunday described Iran’s attack on Israel as a legitimate defence and a natural right in response to strikes on Iranian interests in Syria.

In a statement after Iran’s Revolutionary Guard launched a barrage of drones and missiles at Israel late on Saturday, the Iranian president said the move was within the framework of Tehran’s inherent right to legitimate defence.

He was referring to an April 1 strike on the Iranian consulate building in Damascus, Syria, which resulted in the martyrdom of seven Iranian military officials, including a senior Revolutionary Guard commander for Lebanon and Syria.

Iranian officials blamed the strike on Israel and pledged definitive retaliation.

World leaders are urging restraint after the unprecedented attack by Iran against Israel.
