MOSCOW: Russian President Vladimir Putin has reappointed Mikhail Mishustin as prime minister of the country on Friday, a widely anticipated move from the President to keep on a technocrat having a low political profile.

Mikhail Mishustin and other technocrats in the Cabinet are well known for maintaining a relatively stable economic performance despite bruising Western sanctions for Russia’s recent role in Ukraine. Most of other Cabinet members are expected to keep their jobs, however, future of Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu is still uncertain.

In line with Russian law, Mishustin, 58, who held the job for the past four years, submitted his resignation from the cabinet on Tuesday when Putin began his fifth presidential term at an impressive Kremlin inauguration.

Being former head of Russia’s tax service, Mishustin usually avoided political statements and media interviews during his previous tenure.

Earlier, speaker of the lower house of the parliament, Vyacheslav Volodin, announced that Putin submitted Mishustin’s candidacy to the State Duma, which would hold a session on Friday to consider it.

It is worth noting here that, under the constitutional changes approved in the year 2020, the lower house approves the candidature of the slot of prime minister, who then submits Cabinet members for approval.

Mishustin further stated that the government of Russia planned no restrictions on the businesses of Russian companies do abroad, as he presented his program before a vote on his appointment.

Earlier Russia’s government resigned automatically after Vladimir Putin’s inauguration on May 7, however Putin has nominated Mishustin, as prime minister since 2020, to continue in the same position.
