MOSCOW: President Vladimir Putin urged Russians to vote in polls this weekend, which come at a “difficult” time for Russia, as the long-serving leader seeks to yet again cement his grip on power.

Putin is set to secure another 6-year term this weekend in an election the Kremlin says will show society is fully behind his attack on Ukraine.

In an address to Russians on the eve of the vote, Putin stated he is convinced that people realize the challenges Russia is facing and the difficulties it must overcome in various areas, AFP reported.

To effectively address these challenges and successfully overcome obstacles, Putin emphasized the importance of unity and self-confidence among Russians.

A victory in the March 15-17 election will enable Putin to remain in power until at least 2030, surpassing the tenure of any Russian leader since Catherine the Great in the 18th century.

Putin said in the address that participation in the polls today is a manifestation of patriotic feelings.

Putin highlighted that participating in the polls reflects patriotic sentiments among citizens. He also noted that the election will be held in four recently occupied territories of Ukraine, as well as the Crimean Peninsula, annexed by Russia in 2014.

Russian soldiers to cast vote

Furthermore, Putin mentioned that Russian soldiers at the frontlines will also cast their votes. He praised their heroism and courage in defending the country and stated that they too will participate in the elections.
