KYIV: Russian forces deployed more than two dozen attack drones in Ukraine, targeting critical infrastructure in the central Zhytomyr region and causing damage to logistics facilities in the south, officials confirmed on Monday.

The Zvyahel city council in Ukraine’s Zhytomyr region issued urgent warnings via the Telegram messaging app, advising residents to remain indoors following Russia’s air assault on a vital community infrastructure object. The attack resulted in air pollution, prompting the council to caution against outdoor exposure and recommend keeping windows closed to minimize health risks.

Details regarding the specific nature of the infrastructure hit were not immediately disclosed by officials.

In recent weeks, Russia has escalated its drone and missile strikes against Ukrainian energy facilities, inflicting significant damage and renewing concerns about potential blackouts reminiscent of those experienced during the initial invasion in February 2022.

Ukrainian air defence successfully intercepted 17 out of 24 drones deployed by Russia across multiple regions, including Odesa, Mykolaiv, Kirovohrad, Khmelnytskyi, and Zhytomyr. Additionally, a Russia-launched Kh-59 guided air missile was neutralized over the Dnipropetrovsk region.

Oleh Kiper, the regional governor of southern Odesa, reported that four drones were destroyed in the region, with damage inflicted on a logistics and transport facility along with a gas station. Fortunately, there were no casualties resulting from these attacks.
