MOSCOW: Sergei Naryshkin, the head of Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR), criticized French President Emmanuel Macron’s remarks regarding the possibility of sending European troops to fight Russian soldiers in Ukraine.

Naryshkin labeled Macron’s statements as “extremely dangerous” and accused European leaders, including Macron, of displaying political irresponsibility.

Macron’s comments, made last month, stirred controversy as he stated that while there was no consensus on deploying European troops to Ukraine, nothing should be ruled out. However, other NATO members, including the United States, have emphasized that there are no plans to send troops to Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned that such actions could escalate the conflict to the point of nuclear war.

Naryshkin expressed concern over the deteriorating state of negotiations between Russia and Western leaders, lamenting the lack of common sense and diplomatic skill among European and North Atlantic elites. He highlighted the precariousness of the geopolitical situation, particularly given the immense nuclear arsenals possessed by both Russia and the United States. President Joe Biden has cautioned that any conflict between Russia and NATO could lead to World War Three.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Western leaders pledged support to help Ukraine repel Russian forces and reclaim lost territory. However, Kyiv’s counteroffensive in 2023 failed to make significant gains, and Russian troops continued to advance into Ukrainian territory. The situation is further complicated by domestic political debates in the United States regarding support for Ukraine.

Currently, Russia controls nearly one-fifth of the internationally recognized territory of Ukraine, highlighting the ongoing conflict and the challenges faced by Ukrainian forces in regaining control of their territory. The condemnation of Macron’s remarks underscores the heightened tensions between Russia and the West, with diplomatic efforts proving increasingly ineffective in resolving the crisis.
