Sixth Death Anniversary of Renowned TV Actress Madeeha Gohar Being Observed

ISLAMABAD: The 6th death anniversary of renowned television and stage actress, playwright, director of theatre, and women’s rights activist Madeeha Gohar is being observed today, local media reported on Thursday.

Born on September 21, 1956, in Karachi, Gohar was revered for her exquisite mastery of dialogue delivery and the nuanced portrayal of emotions through her facial expressions. Gohar earned her MA in English literature from Government College University, Lahore, before pursuing a master’s degree in Theatre Sciences from the University of London. Her acting journey commenced in 1973 with PTV, where she left an indelible mark, showcasing her talents in over 100 Urdu and Punjabi dramas.

Following the establishment of the Dramatic Club in 1983, Gohar contributed to the staging of numerous successful dramas under the banner of Ajoka Theatre, including “Bulha”, “Dara”, “Koun Hai Yeh Gustakh”, “Toba Tek Singh”, “Hotel Mohenjodaro”, and “Lo Phir Basant Aayee”.

As a director, Gohar skilfully conveyed powerful messages advocating for social change, tolerance, and humanism, while also addressing gender disparity through her dramas. Her exceptional contributions to the arts were recognized with numerous awards, including the prestigious Fatima Jinnah Award for her artistic services.

In the final three years of her life, Gohar valiantly battled cancer, passing away on April 25, 2018, at the age of 62 in Lahore.   —APP
