CAIRO: The foreign minister of Spain and the secretary-general of the Arab League on Thursday discussed plans for a global peace conference to end the war in the Gaza Strip.

During a meeting in Cairo, Jose Manuel Albares and Ahmed Aboul Gheit reviewed the possibility of holding peace talks aimed at ending the conflict.

Aboul Gheit’s spokesperson, Jamal Rushdi, said the league’s chief had praised Spain’s continuous support for the rights of Palestinians, which he said reflected Madrid’s commitment to principles, justice, and shared human values.

The Arab League’s top official said that the increasing death toll due to Israeli attacks on Gaza was directly stemming from the support of some Western nations to Israel.

Albares is paying an official visit to Egypt as part of a regional tour. He stressed the urgent need for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in the Strip, as well as the preservation of connectivity between Gaza and the West Bank under the Palestinian Authority.

He said an independent Palestinian state must be established as early as possible, saying Spain always wanted to recognize Palestine as a state soon.

Aboul Gheit asked Albares to raise the Palestinian cause in the EU, adding that granting Palestine full membership of the UN would help toward realizing a two-state solution.

Condemning the ongoing Israeli onslaught on Gaza, Albares emphasized the urgent need to get humanitarian assistance into Gaza, while he strongly condemned forced displacement, and warned against Israeli operations in Rafah.
