MADRID: Spain’s historic victory at the Women’s World Cup last year garnered further recognition at the recent Laureus World Sports Awards.

The team was honored as the world team of the year for 2023, while midfielder Aitana Bonmatí was celebrated as the best sportswoman. Novak Djokovic claimed the sportsman of the year title, and Simone Biles received the comeback of the year award.

Jude Bellingham and Rafael Nadal were also recognized for their contributions to sports. Despite the success, the moment was marred by controversy when forward Jenni Hermoso received an unwanted kiss from the then-federation president after the final. Bonmatí, who also helped Barcelona secure a Women’s Champions League title, expressed gratitude to her teammates and staff.

Djokovic’s fifth Laureus sportsman award tied him with Roger Federer, while Biles made a remarkable return with four gold medals at the world championships. Nadal was acknowledged for his foundation’s work with vulnerable youth in Spain and India. Additionally, Arisa Trew and Diede de Groot were honored for their achievements in action sports and wheelchair tennis, respectively.
