Newfoundland: A submersible used to take tourists to view the Titanic wreck has gone missing in the Atlantic Ocean.

According the BBC, the Boston Coastguard said that a search and rescue operation was under way for submersible off the coast of Newfoundland.

It is unclear how many people were aboard the vessel when it went missing.

Small submersibles occasionally take paying experts and tourists to view the wreck of the Titanic, some 3,800m beneath the ocean surface.

OceanGate Expeditions, a private company that sends submersibles for deep-sea expeditions has said in its social media posts that one of its expeditions was underway.

The company charges guests 250,000 dollars for a place on its 8-day expedition to see the famous wreck, according to the BBC.

The company said on its website one expedition is underway and two more have been planned for June next year.

The company says the submersible can seat 5 people, which generally includes a pilot, 3 guests, and one “content expert”.

A full dive to the historic wreck, including the decent and ascent, takes about eight hours.
