LONDON: The United Kingdom has announced sanctions on four “extremist Israeli settlers” accused of perpetrating human rights abuses against Palestinians in the West Bank, reflecting a similar action taken by the United States earlier this month.

The sanctions come in response to what the UK described as “unprecedented levels of violence by extremist settlers” in the West Bank, particularly by residents of illegal Israeli settlements and outposts.

This decision represents a rare instance of both London and Washington imposing sanctions on Israelis, highlighting growing international condemnation of actions taken by some settlers in the occupied territory.

British Foreign Secretary David Cameron emphasized the need for Israel to take stronger action to curb settler violence, stating that commitments made by the Israeli government must be followed through with concrete measures.

Israeli Settlers’ Violence Against Palestinians

Cameron condemned the actions of “extremist Israeli settlers,” noting their use of threats and violence against Palestinian civilians, which he deemed illegal and unacceptable. He emphasized that such behavior undermines security and stability for both Israelis and Palestinians.

Among the Israelis sanctioned by the UK are Moshe Sharvit and Yinon Levy, who have been accused of using physical aggression and threatening Palestinian families at gunpoint. Additionally, Zvi Bar Yosef was targeted for his involvement in establishing an illegal outpost described as a “source of systematic intimidation and violence” by local Palestinian residents. Ely Federman was sanctioned for his alleged involvement in incidents against Palestinian shepherds in the South Hebron Hills.

It is noteworthy that Yinon Levy was also among the Israelis targeted by the US when it announced sanctions against four Israeli settlers on February 1.
