UNITED NATIONS: Martin Griffiths, the United Nations’ humanitarian chief, denounced Israel’s ongoing bombardment campaign in the besieged Gaza Strip as a “betrayal of humanity” on Saturday.

Griffiths, who serves as the outgoing under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs and emergency relief, issued a statement ahead of the six-month anniversary of the Israeli military offensive, urging for accountability for what he described as a grave humanitarian crisis.

“Each day, this war claims more civilian victims,” Griffiths stated, highlighting the devastating toll of the conflict on innocent civilians. He emphasized the urgent need for collective action to address the dire situation in Gaza and prevent further escalation of violence.

The conflict, which began on October 7, has resulted in significant Palestinian casualties. Since October 7, Israel has launched extensive airstrikes and military operations in Gaza, killing at least 33,137 people, mostly women and children.

Griffiths expressed deep concern over the impact of the conflict on Gaza’s civilian population, noting the severe challenges faced by aid organizations in delivering assistance amid ongoing hostilities and access restrictions.

“As the conflict continues unabated, the humanitarian situation in Gaza remains dire,” Griffiths lamented, underscoring the urgent need for humanitarian assistance and protection for vulnerable populations.

The UN humanitarian chief extended his condolences to the families of those affected by the conflict and reiterated the organization’s commitment to providing support to those in need. “On this day, my heart goes out to the families of those killed, injured or taken hostage, and to those who face the particular suffering of not knowing the plight of their loved ones,” he said in the statement.
