ISLAMABAD: The International Court of Justice (ICJ) was asked by the 193-member United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Friday to give an opinion regarding legal consequences of Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories.
In a 1967 war, Israel captured Gaza, West Bank, and East Jerusalem, which are areas that the Palestinians want for a state. In 2005, Israel withdrew from Gaza, however, along with neighboring Egypt, it controls the enclave’s borders.
UNGA vote seeks ICJ opinion on occupation by Israel
The Hague-based ICJ deals with disputes between states. It is the top UN court whose rulings are binding, but the ICJ has no power to enforce them.
