NEW YORK: Iran at the United Nations Security Council on Thursday said that Israel must be forced to stop any further military adventure against its interests.

Secretary-General of the UN, Antonio Guterres has already painted a dark picture of the situation in the Middle East, warning that spiraling tensions over the war in Gaza and Iran’s attack on Israel could result in a “full-scale regional conflict.”

Israel has said it will respond to Iran’s April 13 missile and drone attack, which Tehran says was conducted in response to a suspected Israeli attack on its diplomatic compound in Damascus earlier this month.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian said if Israel violates Iran’s sovereignty, the Islamic Republic will not hesitate to assert its rights to give a decisive response to it.

His remarks came after an Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander said earlier that Iran could review its nuclear doctrine after threats from Israel.

Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for maximum restraint by all parties at a U.N. Security Council session on the Middle East.

He said it is high time to end the bloody cycle of retaliation. He added that the global community must come forward to stop any moves that could push the entire region of the Middle East over the edge of war, with a devastating impact on the civilian population.

Israel’s U.N. Ambassador Gilad Erdan speaking earlier on Thursday in the Security Council, criticized Amirabdollahian’s presence at the international body.
