MAJURO, Marshall Islands: Pacific leaders have welcomed the signing of a new economic and security agreement with the United States after a five-month delay. President Joe Biden signed the Compact of Free Association agreements with Palau, the Marshall Islands, and the Federated States of Micronesia in Washington over the weekend. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken expressed eagerness to collaborate with Pacific partners over the next two decades.

The 20-year deal, approved by the US Senate as part of a $460 billion spending package, provides a total of $7.1 billion in funding to the three Pacific nations. The compact agreement offers security and budget assurances to the Pacific nations while granting Washington influence and the ability to establish military facilities across the central Pacific.

Marshall Islands President Hilda Heine hailed the agreement as a significant step in strengthening mutual efforts and improving the Compact. The deal includes $700 million for the Marshalls over the next four years, alongside special funds for climate change mitigation and additional healthcare funding.

Micronesia President Wesley Simina described the signing as an important milestone, marking a new chapter in the enduring partnership with the United States. Micronesia will receive funding for education, healthcare, environmental projects, and infrastructure improvements.

Palau President Surangel Whipps Jr’s office welcomed the signing, emphasizing the positive impact of the legislation, which includes $889 million for Palau. The delay in Washington had raised concerns, with leaders warning of damage to US relations with the Pacific nations and the potential for increased Chinese influence in the region.

The signing of the agreement concludes months of uncertainty and delay, providing vital support and reaffirming the enduring partnership between the United States and its Pacific allies.
