ADELAIDE, Australia: Afghanistan’s star leg-spinner, Rashid Khan, has withdrawn from Australia’s Big Bash League due to a back injury requiring minor surgery on Thursday, as confirmed by his team.

Khan, the world’s top-ranked Twenty20 bowler, was set to join the Adelaide Strikers for the seventh consecutive year at the upcoming tournament.

Expressing regret at his absence, Tim Nielson, the club’s general manager, highlighted Khan’s immense popularity among fans and his significant contributions to the team over the past seven years. Nielson emphasised Khan’s affection for Adelaide, the Strikers, and his passion for the BBL while assuring support for his treatment to ensure his continued involvement in the sport.

Since his debut in 2017 as a 19-year-old, Khan has been an integral part of the Strikers, claiming 98 wickets in 69 matches, with remarkable figures of 6-17.

Khan’s departure adds to the BBL’s recent setbacks, following England’s hard-hitting batter Harry Brook opting out of the Melbourne Stars squad due to concerns regarding workload.
