Attack on Muslim Students in India, Against Principles of Humanity

ISLAMABAD:  Attack on Muslim students in Indian state of Gujrat by a Hindu far-right mob during the holy month of Ramadan is an assault on the principles of humanity and religious freedom.

At Gujarat University in western India, a group of Muslim students gathered inside the boys’ hostel premises for the Ramadan tarawih prayer since there is no mosque on the university campus.

A mob, carrying knives and sticks, stormed the hostel, assaulted the students, and destroyed their rooms. The attackers shouted slogans like “Jai Shri Ram” (Hail Lord Ram) and pelted stones, causing injuries to foreign students.

According to reports students from Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and several African nations were attacked.

Targeting of individuals based on their religion is a form of genocide. Any country in the world disregarding such actions must be held accountable under international law.

It is imperative for governments across the world to speak out against these atrocities and take concrete steps to ensure the protection and safety of all religious and ethnic minorities.

The absolutely disgusted by Indian mob attacking Muslim students during Ramadan is not just an attack on individuals, but an assault on the principles of humanity and religious freedom.

Experts have called upon the world not to turn a blind eye to the systematic persecution of Muslims in India. These attacks on students praying during Ramadan are a clear indication of the dangerous rise of Islamophobia.

India to be held accountable for atrocities against Muslims

According to international law no one should ever fear for their safety while praying. The attacks on Muslim students are heinous and must be condemned by the international community. Experts have urged the international community to held India accountable for these atrocities.

Attacking someone for their faith is to attack the very essence of humanity. The violence against Muslim students in India is a disgrace to mankind. The crime must be met with swift and decisive action.

Such attacks on minorities are not uncommon in India. Muslims of Kashmir have been facing the brutality of India for last seven decades despite UN Security Council resolutions.

The Indian government has also been trying to implement an anti-Muslim citizenship law which the United Nations has termed fundamentally discriminatory in nature. Under the law it is easier to get Indian citizenship for non-Muslims from three South Asian states. After the announcement of the controversial law widespread protests erupted in India.

In January India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi had also inaugurated the Ram Mandir temple in Ayodhya, constructed on the demolished historical Babri Mosque’s site.
