SHANGHAI: Chinese automaker Geely Holding Group has successfully launched 11 low-earth orbit satellites, marking its second dispatch aimed at expanding its navigation capabilities for autonomous vehicles.

The satellites, launched from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in Sichuan province, will provide high-precision positioning support for self-driving cars, with plans to have a constellation of 240 satellites by 2025.

Geely’s satellite network, initiated with its first launch in June 2022, is not only geared towards enhancing navigation for autonomous vehicles but also extends to various commercial functions, including connectivity to the consumer electronics sector. The company envisions that the network will play a crucial role in supporting self-driving technologies and providing accurate positioning information.

Geely Expanding Satellite Capabilities

Equipped with AI remote sensing functions, the satellites offer clear high-resolution imaging with a precision range of 1 to 5 meters (3.2 to 16.4 feet). Geely anticipates further expansion of its satellite capabilities, reinforcing its commitment to advancing autonomous driving technologies.

China’s satellite industry has seen a surge in private investment since 2014 when the government opened up the space sector to commercial entities. Geely’s foray into satellite technology aligns with China’s broader goals outlined in the five-year plan for 2021-2025, focusing on the integration of satellite networks for communications, remote sensing, and navigation.
