BEIJING: Indonesia’s Great Indonesia Movement Party General Chairman Prabowo Subianto is scheduled to visit China from March 31 to April 2, as announced by Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying on Friday.

Prabowo, who is set to assume office later this year, received an invitation from President Xi Jinping to visit China from Sunday to Tuesday, according to Hua Chunying.

President Xi had recently extended congratulations to Prabowo, Indonesia’s defense minister, on his electoral victory, emphasizing the significant importance attached to relations with Indonesia, a nation comprising nearly 280 million people.

China stands out as one of the largest sources of foreign direct investment in Indonesia. Notably, Jakarta unveiled Southeast Asia’s inaugural high-speed rail line last year, a massive project supported by Beijing’s substantial investments.

Chinese companies have made substantial investments in Indonesia’s natural resources in recent years, particularly in the nickel sector. However, such investments have also sparked concerns over labor conditions and wages at various Chinese-funded nickel-processing facilities, coinciding with Jakarta’s ambitions to play a pivotal role in the electric vehicle supply chain.
