ISLAMABAD: Iran launched attack on innocent children in Pakistan on 16 Jan 2024 alleging they attacked bases for the militant Jaish al Adl in the border town of Panjgur in Balochistan. The Iranian state media report prompted strong condemnation from Islamabad.

Pakistan in response has not given a knee jerk reaction but history has proven that they are really good at Quid Pro Quo (tit for tat). Pakistan reaction to Indian aggression in Balakot in Feb 2019 is a case in point.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has issued a measured statement in line with Pakistan’s state policy, further deliberations are ongoing, a very important and urgent meeting is underway and all options on the table.  Pakistan is aware of the regional situation and we expect that while Pakistan responds to public expectations in defense of sovereignty, it will also show sufficient restraint in line with its stature as a nuclear country.

Pakistan has deliberately avoided media hype, frenzy so far (to the dislike of many journalists), controlling flow of disinformation. This is to prevent information from influencing the government’s decisions. It seems that Iran has intentions to remain relevant at the time when it completely failed to substantially contribute during Gaza crisis.

Pakistan strongly condemned the unprovoked violation of its airspace by Iran which resulted in death of two innocent children while injuring three girls, a foreign ministry statement said late Tuesday.

“This violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty is completely unacceptable and can have serious consequences,” it said.

It said Pakistan’s strong protest has already been lodged with the concerned senior official in the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tehran.

Additionally, the Iranian Charge d’affaires has been called to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to convey strongest condemnation of this blatant violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty and that the responsibility for the consequences will lie squarely with Iran, said the statement.

It added that Pakistan has always said terrorism is a common threat to all countries in the region that requires coordinated action.

Such unilateral acts are not in conformity with good neighbourly relations and can seriously undermine bilateral trust and confidence, the foreign ministry said in the statement.
