ISLAMABAD: The Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) terror group has claimed responsibility for an attack in Egypt on a security checkpoint earlier this week.
Casualties
Two gunmen on a motorbike attacked a checkpoint of police on Friday in the Suez canal city of Ismailia. As per the local media, an attacker was killed during the attack, without giving any details about fatalities among police forces. However, foreign media has said that three policemen were killed in the attack.
The Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham News Agency AMAQ said that a ”cell of its soldiers” had attacked a checkpoint of police with a machine gun.
It said policemen were injured and killed in the attack and no further details were given. On the ISIS claim, no Egyptian official has given any statement. The attack on Friday was the first in nearly three years in mainland Egypt.
ISIS affiliated Wilayat Sinai group
The Wilayat Sinai group, affiliated with ISIS, has staged an insurgency since 2013 against Egyptian security forces, particularly in the Sinai Peninsula, killing hundreds of security personnel.
